“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.”

— Steve Jobs

If you’re not having fun,
there’s a good chance
you may be doing it wrong.

Coming up through the agency world from graphic designer to creative director, I spent years shoulder-to-shoulder with insanely talented photographers. Somewhere between art directing shoots and asking too many technical questions, I got brave enough to invest in a my very own Canon decked out with a nifty-fifty (IFKYK) and never really put it down.

What started as taking terrible photos of my kids grew into family and senior photos, and quickly turned into an obsession for the craft, the gear, and trying my hardest to keep up the constant evolution of the media. Yes, it stuck. No, to weddings. Never weddings. I found myself most comfortable in the weeds, on a shop floor, and more often than not, on the ground next to something loud and expensive.

I have a reputation of being what I like to call a “serial hobbyist” which manifests as a habit of taking things apart, putting them together almost right and building things I probably didn’t need to build myself. So, when I’m not shooting, I’m usually remodeling something, woodworking, or tearing apart cars, Jeeps, or motorcycles, all in the name of “learning.” That same mindset applies to my work. Respect the craft, obsess over the details, and make something solid. And have some damn fun while doing it.
